Five years after her mother’s divorce, Sabina, a young girl living in Basel, goes to Azerbaijan, her country of origin, to meet her father and her elder sister who stayed with him in Baku. Her secret wish is to settle there with them. But her father is getting remarried and her sister is torn apart by her fiancé’s departure for the army. Lost between two cultures, Sabina tries to get a better understanding of her ancestor’s country.
IT WAS A BROWN-EYED GIANT is a documentary film largely bordering on fiction through its stage and actors direction. Although the film mainly portrays a young girl and her family, it gives a wider insight on contemporary Azerbaijani society and returns to the eternal question of building oneself while being confronted to two cultures.

Her first feature film, IT WAS A BROWN-EYED GIANT was written, produced and directed within nine months. It was showed in January 2012 at the International Rotterdam Festival for its world premiere.
