Tod Browning
A gifted magician, singer and comedian, Browning starts performing as a teenager in circuses, then on Broadway stages. He makes an impression on D.W. Griffith and becomes his assistant on Intolerance : Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916). He turns towards directing in 1917, moving from one style to the next, yet always keeping a distinct taste for burlesque and macabre with movies ranging from Outside the Law (1921), The Unknown (1927), The Show (1927), Iron Man (1931), Dracula (1931) to Freaks, (1932), in which he goes back to the circus world. In 1944, he receives an honorary Oscar to crown his career.
