Coumba is the first girl in her village to leave for the big city to study. But an accident occurs that will cast a shadow on her family’s survival. Coumba’s father decides to force Debo, Coumba’s younger sister, aged 11, to marry.
Torn between her village’s age-old traditions and her dreams of a better future, Coumba formulates a cunning plot to save her sister from her destiny.
The first time Jeremy Teicher met the students of the Senegalese village Sinthiou Mdabane was during the shooting of the documentary THIS IS US. He asked them about their projects for the future and filmed their everyday lives. Two years later, he goes back to shoot TALL AS THE BAOBOAB TREE with the same villagers, turned actors who became actors for the occasion.
After graduating with honours from Dartmouth College where he studied cinema, theatre and literature, Jeremy Teicher realised the documentary THIS IS US in 2010, a movie nominated at the Student Academy Awards. Supported by the Dartmouth College Dickey Center for International Understanding, amongst others, the movie premiere took place in Dakar’s American embassy. He also made FOUSQUARE DAY (2011), programmed at the Los Angeles International Children’s Film Festival. Aged 23, he signed his first fiction feature film TALL AS THE BAOBAB TREE in 2012.
