Cosimo is an aging crook. He is arrested by the police as he tries to steal a car. To get out of prison early he asks his accomplices to find a “pigeon” : someone who can take his place behind bars. Pepe is chosen, and meets the prison director to plead his guilt. But the prison director decides to lock them both up. Outwitted, Cosimo lets Pepe in on the secret of his next “job”, an infallible plan which he hopes to put into action after his release. But Pepe is released first and organises the heist with Cosimo’s former accomplices…

Mario Monicelli
Son of the journalist and theatre critic Tommasso Monicelli, Mario Monicelli (1915 – 2010) studied history and philiosophy before becoming an arts critic in 1932 and began his career in directing. His 1951 film Guardie e ladri won an award at Cannes for its screenplay, which he co-authored. In his prolific filmography, one can find numerous examples of comic films which provide a critique of social mores, combining tragedy and comedy, and with a corrosive sense of humour such as : La Grande Guerra (1959), I compagni (1963) and Volgiamo i colonnelli (1973).
