Joe Dante / Fiction / United States / 1984 / 1h45 / VOSTF et VF
Original Title : Gremlins
From 9 years old
For Christmas, Rand Pelzer buys his son Billy a “mogwai”, an adorable and mysterious pet, as small and silky as a teddy bear. The Chinese shopkeeper who sold it is categorical : the little fluffy animal is an adorable pet… but must never be exposed to water or light, and must never be fed after midnight.
As a young art student passionate about fantasy and genre cinema, Joe Dante is asked to participate in the coproduction of a small budget movie, Hollywood Boulevard (1976). Drawing on this success, he realises the B movie Piranhas (1978) and attracts the attention of Steven Spielberg who will produce his following films, including The Howling (1981) and the blockbuster Gremlins. His quirky humour hits the bull’s eye. After several other movies, including Explorers (1985), Gremlins 2 : The new batch (1990) and Matinee (1993), a tribute to his childhood movies, Joe Dante retires almost completely from the sets to concentrate on television.
