Maria lives with her mother in the Canary Islands, 3000 kilometres away from Barcelona and the home of her father, Miguel Gallardo. Occasionally, Miguel and Maria go on holiday together, spending a week in a seaside resort in the south of Gran Canaria Island. It is an unusual context where it is rare to see a single father with his fourteen year-old autistic daughter. This is the story of one of their journeys, but it is first and foremost an original tale, full of humour, irony and sincerity, about living with disability. María y Yo is a film adaptation of a comic book by Miguel Gallardo, which won the National Comic Book Prize in Catalonia.

Miguel Gallardo, festival guest

Miguel Gallardo
Miguel Gallardo is one of Spain’s most prominent comic book authors. He co-founded the cult magazine Makoki, which revolutionised Spanish comic books in the 1980s. One of the leading members of the comic book underground, his works became increasingly autobiographical during the 1990s, and include Un largo silencio (which recounts his father’s memories of the civil war).
