Joe Dante / Fiction / United States / 1993 / 1h29 / VOSTF ou VF
Original Title : Matinee
From 11 years old
October 1962, the Cuban missile crisis has plunged the small town of Key West in an atomic psychosis. Amidst the chaos, Gene Loomis, a lonely teenager, is waiting for the arrival of the horror movie producer Lawrence Woolsey for his new movie, “Mant !” : the story of a man turned into a giant ant after being exposed to radioactive waves.
As a young art student passionate about fantasy and genre cinema, Joe Dante is asked to participate in the coproduction of a small budget movie, Hollywood Boulevard (1976). Drawing on this success, he realises the B movie Piranhas (1978) and attracts the attention of Steven Spielberg who will produce his following films, including The Howling (1981) and the blockbuster Gremlins. His quirky humour hits the bull’s eye. After several other movies, including Explorers (1985), Gremlins 2 : The new batch (1990) and Matinee (1993), a tribute to his childhood movies, Joe Dante retires almost completely from the sets to concentrate on television.
