A merchant wakes up on a marvellous island after a terrible sea storm. While exploring the place, he discovers a scarlet flower and plucks it to make a present to his daughter, Nastenka. The island owner, a strange monster, suddenly appears. He accepts to give the flower… in exchange for Nastenka.

Lev Atamanov
Born in 1905 in Moscow, Lev Atamanov is one of the great names of Russian animation. He is famous for having produced The Little Scarlet Flower (Alenkiy tsvetochek), the Golden Antelope (Zolotaya antilopa), special distinction for short films at the Cannes Festival in 1955, as well as the Snow Queen, Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1957, first prize in the animated films category in the Cannes Festival in 1958 and special prize at the Moscow Film Festival that same year. Twenty years later, he is granted the honorary title of People’s Artist of Russia.
