Tony Gatlif

Born in 1948 in Algiers from a kabylian father and a gypsy mother, Gatlif arrives in France in 1960 during the Algerian war. Following a chaotic path, he works in theatre before directing La tête en ruine (1975), his first feature film. In 1981, with the movie Corre gitano, he takes on what will become his favourite subject, the universe of the gypsy community. He carries on with, amongst others, les princes (1983), Latcho Drom (1993), shown in Cannes, and Gadjo Dilo in 1997 with Rona Hartner and Romain Duris. He works with this actor again in 2004 with Exiles and wins the award for best director in the Cannes Film Festival. This same festival closes its 2006 edition with a presentation of Transylvania. Before Geronimo (2014), Tony Gatlif focuses on the european indignados community with The Outraged (2012).
