Germany, 1349. The country is devastated by the plague. A company of street artists and a mysterious pipe player arrive in Hamelin, still untouched by the outbreak. They are denied entry in the town, where everybody is busy preparing the wedding of the burgomaster’s daughter, Lisa, still a child, with Franz, the cruel and greedy son of a local baron.

Jacques Demy

Born in 1931 near Nantes, Demy follows the Art School’s evening classes before joining the Louis Lumière College in 1949, where he studies directing and camerawork. He becomes Paul Grimaud’s and Georges Rouquier’s assistant. In 1960, after several short films, he moves on to feature films with Lola, his first collaboration with the composer Michel Legrand. After Bay of Angels (1963) comes The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1964. After the musicals The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), Demy leaves for the United States and directs, amongst other, Model Shop (1968), Magic Donkey (1970) and The Pied Piper (1972). Following several unfinished projects, A Room in Town is released in 1982, followed by Three Seats for the 26th in 1988. He dies in 1990 in Paris.
