Makoto Shinkai

Makoto Shinkai was born in 1973 in Nagano. He studied Japanese literature at Chuo University. After he gratuated, he joined a video game company and worked there as a 3D graphic designer. During his spare time, he made animated short films. The success of Kanoujo no Neko (1999) pushed him to devote himself to animation. After his second short film Hoshi no Koe, he turned to feature films with The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004), thanks to which he came to fame. It was acclaimed by critics and received many awards. After 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007), he directed Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011), and the medium length film The Garden of Words (2012). Several Japanese animation magazines call him « the new Miyazaki. »
